You are probably asking yourself why I have included a website in my heading but the answer is simple - if you have access to the internet then this is a fascinating site to visit, with beautiful photographs and drawings, and brief histories of many of the objects which A & G Sledge make. This is a comprehensive range of ready assembled items and kits including chairs, tables, beds, all manner of storage and dolls' house components (newel posts, doors etc.).

I learned from the website that "A Teapoy is a small pillar table which supports a tea chest or tea caddy introduced in the late 18th century because tea between 1700 and 1800 was a very expensive commodity and as such was kept in elaborate, lockable containers."

As a little girl, one of my favourite treats was to sit on my granny's bed and open her workbox. The lovely pale blue silk lining and all the pretty buttons enchanted me and when I was ten she gave me her silver thimble decorated with daisies because I was already a passionate needlewoman (and miniaturist). I could hardly believe my eyes when I opened this kit and there it was - granny's workbox!

The pieces are so accurately cut that only the lightest of sanding is needed before gluing. It is suggested that you stain first but I like to use shoe polish as this gives such a gentle sheen, but if you stain then you can spray lacquer it when finished.

The instructions are very clear with a layout sheet showing each part life size - this must be even more useful when making one of their more complicated kits. Every stage is described sensibly and I found this a very easy kit to construct. The final product is delightful and would be an asset in any dolls' house set after 1700!
