DAVENPORT DESK

OF ALL the pieces of reproduction furniture that came down the production line, I loved Davenports the best. I picture Captain Davenport commissioning Messrs Gillows (later to become Waring and Gillows) to make a travelling desk to take to far flung parts of the British Empire.

As I now expect to find, these kits from Australia are very good. The timber is excellent, the machining of the parts first class, the assembly instructions are simple and adequate.

It helps to have a work top (as described in DHW) to assemble the drawers and carcass keeping them square, as well as a sanding board also described in DHW. This helps with all the sanding operations especially fitting the drawers. For the careful gluing you will need a hypodermic-type glue dispenser and a fast setting wood glue, a pair of tweezers to help inserting the drawer knobs, a small piece of very fine sandpaper to clean up after assembly.

And that is all you need to assemble this delightful piece. It took me just two hours to complete.

Even if you have never assembled a furniture kit before, this you will find easy and straight forward.
